Establish New Credential Process

Below is a general workflow for the establishment of a new 91ÁÔÆæ credential. Please reach out with the initial draft of your proposal to the Vice Provost for Academic Programs, the WSCUC ALO and Director of Institutional Assessment, and the Academic Programs Team (group email link)

Originator prepares a new credential packet, which includes:

Originator should also:

  • Submit a Substantive Change Form (DOC - with notes) to Sharlene Sayegh.
  • Obtain approval from their department/college toward the establishment of a new credential.
    • This approval is traditionally proved through official memos or letters of support from the College Dean or their designee.
  • If the credential has content and/or course offering(s) that require collaboration with another college, approval of the new credential is required from the partner college's Dean or their designee is required.
    • It is important to ensure a resource/budget plan is in place and fully approved by all parties for collaborative programs.

Digital copies of all proposal materials that were approved by the department and college are forwarded to the Vice Provost of Academic Programs and the Office of Academic Programs (catalog@csulb.edu). The proposal is reviewed by both offices and feedback is provided to the proposer.

When details of the documents are finalized, the Academic Programs Office will move the proposal forward toward the 91ÁÔÆæ Academic Senate.

The proposal packet is shared with the 91ÁÔÆæ Academic Senate Chair.

Upon their approval of the materials, the proposal will be shared with the Senate's Curriculum and Educational Policies Council (CEPC) and University Resource Council (URC) for review. Proposers will be invited to discuss their proposals with these councils, and potentially be asked to make updates to the content.

Depending on any contention with the proposal, the final recommendation by these councils may be forwarded to the Academic Senate for further review, or receive approval from the Senate.

Upon recommendation by the Academic Senate, the Vice Provost's Office complete a review. If approved, the Academic Programs Office seeks the President's approval.

Upon approval from the President, the new credential will be published in the following Fall's Catalog, published in March/April, effective the following Fall.
